The Honest Picture

Surgery Was the Easy Part. Recovery Is Where the Work Happens.

Orthopedic surgeons will tell you: the outcome of a joint replacement or orthopedic procedure has as much to do with post-surgical rehabilitation as it does with the procedure itself. A successful surgery followed by inadequate rehab still produces a struggling patient.

“Legacy is a gem. The therapy staff were standouts — they helped her walk again after a bad fall. Thank you for treating my mom like family.”

— Karen M., Daughter of Legacy Orthopedic Recovery Patient

The most common complaints after joint replacement — persistent stiffness, limited range of motion, weakness, and fear of falling — are not inevitable. They’re what happens when rehabilitation is generic, inconsistent, or not aggressive enough. The patients with high satisfaction ratings have one thing in common: a dedicated team, the right equipment, and a care plan built around their specific surgery and goals.

Conditions We Treat

Orthopedic Procedures Our Program Supports

Total Knee Replacement

Rebuilding strength, range of motion, and gait mechanics after TKR — with equipment and protocols designed for safe knee recovery.

Total Hip Replacement

Hip precaution protocols, safe mobility training, and functional independence reestablished in a supervised, fall-safe environment.

Shoulder Replacement & Repair

Upper extremity rehab focused on strength, reach, and functional use for daily living tasks.

Hip Fracture Repair

ORIF and hemiarthroplasty recovery — with careful weight-bearing progressions, fall prevention, and bone healing monitoring.

Spinal Procedures

Post-laminectomy, fusion, and decompression recovery with physician-guided mobility and core stabilization programs.

Lower Extremity Fractures

Tibia, fibula, ankle, and foot fracture recovery — with progressive weight-bearing and functional mobility retraining.

The Equipment Difference

Advanced Rehab Tools That Accelerate Recovery

Most facilities have a standard therapy gym. Legacy has specialized orthopedic equipment that lets therapists push recovery further — safely.

Variable-Grade Parallel Bars

Adjustable-height parallel bars that support safe gait training at every stage — from first steps to independent walking.

Dynamic Stair Trainers / Ramp

Step training in a controlled, supervised environment — essential prep for returning to a home with stairs or a ramp.

Omnicycle Equipment

Low-impact cycling that promotes joint mobility, circulation, and cardiovascular conditioning without stressing the surgical site.

Balance & Proprioception Boards

Targeted fall-prevention training that rebuilds the proprioceptive feedback the nervous system loses after surgery and immobility.

Therapeutic Modalities

Ice, heat, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound — used strategically to manage swelling, pain, and tissue healing between sessions.

The Recovery Roadmap

What Orthopedic Rehabilitation at Legacy Looks Like

1

Days 1–2

Surgery-Specific Evaluation

Our physiatrist and PT review your operative report, weight-bearing orders, and precautions from your surgeon. Your plan is built on what was done in the OR — not a template.

2

Days 2–7

Early Mobilization

Mobility training begins the day after assessment — bed transfers, standing, and initial gait work — within your surgeon’s parameters. Pain is proactively managed.

3

Weeks 2–3

Strength & Function

Therapy progresses to strength, range of motion, and functional tasks. Balance retraining begins; the Omnicycle may be introduced. OT supports daily-living independence.

4

Weeks 3–6

Home Preparation

Stair training, car transfers, meal prep, and home modifications are addressed before discharge. Family joins final sessions; your outpatient/home-health referral is in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Orthopedic Rehab Questions, Answered Honestly

Skilled nursing facilities offer a range of therapy equipment you won’t typically find at home or through home health- variable-grade ramps and stairs, omni-cycles, and ultrasound therapy, among others. Access to this equipment supports a more comprehensive and often faster recovery.

Throughout your stay, a coordinated team of therapists and clinicians monitor your progress daily, adjusting your care as needed. Finally, recovery isn’t a solitary journey. You are alongside others on a similar path, building rapport and camaraderie along the way.

Absolutely, pain control is always addressed before a therapy session is initiated. Your physician actively reviews your nursing pain assessments, adjusts medications, and works with your therapist to ensure pain is managed well enough for you to participate meaningfully in therapy. Some discomfort during therapy is to be expected – but undertreated pain is not acceptable here.

Consider minor vs. major surgery, your living situation, your support system, and your functional status at discharge. Many patients who go home too early end up readmitted or struggle with complications. A short stay at Legacy is often the faster path to true independence.

Most stays range from 2 to 4 weeks. Hip and knee replacements without complications often need 2–3 weeks. More complex cases — fractures, spinal procedures, comorbidities — may need longer. Your team sets goals and updates projections throughout.

Acute rehab hospitals (IRFs) serve patients who tolerate 3+ hours of therapy daily. Post-acute rehab at Legacy suits patients needing intensive but more graduated rehabilitation — often with greater functional loss or medical complexity. And progress isn’t capped here: once a patient reaches a level that meets acute rehab criteria, Legacy will refer them to an acute rehabilitation unit for more extensive recovery.

You’ll have one or two dedicated PT and OT sessions (ST as needed), typically 45–60 minutes each. Between sessions, nursing staff supports your mobility, medication management, and comfort.

Before discharge, your team arranges home health and ensures follow-up appointments are scheduled, then communicates your progress notes to home health for continuity of care.
